❏ INTRODUCTION: a paragraph or two explaining your central question, your topic, and, briefly, your research plan
The topic of my Capstone Project is the relationship between perception and reality, and will try to answer the question “What is the nature of perception and reality?”. I plan on investigating which is more important, how they influence each other, and how often (if ever) they are the same thing. For research, I plan to look at this topic from several different lenses (Modern day, media, historical, scientific, etc…) and consult with various Galloway and non-Galloway experts that have knowledge and insight relating to those different lenses. ❏ SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS: a list of potential internal and external subject matter experts, how they connect to your topic/question and what you hope to learn Internal subject matter experts:
❏ TIMELINE: a personal capstone project calendar (what you need to accomplish + when, as detailed as you need it to be)
❏ THE SCHOLARLY CONVERSATION: a list of important scholarly voices on your topic and a brief explanation of why they’re on this list
❏ INITIAL THOUGHTS: a collection of possible speculative answers to your research question (written in paragraph/s? as a mindmap? in bullet points? Choose a format that makes sense to you.)
Orwell, George. 1984. London, Secker and Warburg, 1949. 1984 is a novel written by George Orwell in 1949, following the end of the WWII. The novel takes place in a dystopian world where authoritarian governments control all information in their countries. The government in 1984 uses thought police to attempt to control the thoughts and sentiments of their citizens, and, most important to my project, the government regurlarly changes records and reprints articles to literally change history in order to control the people’s view of the world. 1984 is a very important piece to my project. To start, reading this novel was what first began my thinking about how perception and reality are related. Specifically, it made me wonder about the nature of history in relation to our perception of it; is the reality of history or our perception of it more important? The novel provides a very interseting perspective on my topic as well, as it was written in a time where the ideas and themes Orwell focuses on were very relevant and very uncertain. Because of this, this novel can apply to many of the different aspects of my project that I hope to have. Toadvine, Ted, "Maurice Merleau-Ponty", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Spring 2019 Edition), Edward N. Zalta (ed.), URL = <https://plato.stanford.edu/archives/spr2019/entries/merleau-ponty/>. This article discusses the ideas and work of Maurice Merleu-Ponty. Ponty was a 20th century philosopher who is known for his focus on the physchology and nature of perception. This article is largely a summary of his many ideas and works, putting them into simpler and more succienct terms. For my project, I hope to include as many different points of view and perspectives as possible about the nature of perception and reality. Part of this includes finding as many different scholarly voices and philosophical opinions as I can to take into consideration, as this is very important for forming my own views on such a widespanning, complex subject. As such, Ponty’s work in analyzing perception is very important to my project, as I can use it as a cornerstone to begin building my own thoughts off of. Alisa V. Petrovich. “Perception and Reality: Colbert's Native American Policy.” Louisiana History: The Journal of the Louisiana Historical Association, vol. 39, no. 1, 1998, pp. 73–83. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/4233472. Accessed 14 Feb. 2020. “Perception and Reality: Colbert’s Native American Policy” is an article by Alisa V. Petrovich about one specific example of the relationship between perception and reality. Specifically, this article covers Jean-Babtiste Colbert’s handling of the native policies of the French colony of Louisiana. The article analyzes where Colbert’s perceptions on Native Americans came from and how those perceptions influenced his actions. This article is important to my project as it provides a historical context in which the relatioship between perception and reality had an important and undeniable impact. I plan to have a very large portion of my project revolve around historical factors, examples, and evidence, and so this article is a very key piece to have. Jewell-Lapan, Waldo. “Perception and Reality.” The Journal of Philosophy, vol. 33, no. 14, 1936, pp. 365–373. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/2016546. Accessed 14 Feb. 2020. “Perception and Reality” is an article written by Waldo Jewell-Lapan for the Journal of Philosophy. As the name suggests, it is a very in-depth analysis of the philosophical and psychological aspects of perception. The article specifically discusses the key differences between the two and in what ways each is relevant to us. As previously mentioned, I hope to have a wide variety of voices and persectives related to my subject matter taken into account in my project. By taking in more philosophical viewpoints on my topic, I will be able to contrast and compare them to one another and build my own ideas off of them. Greenblatt, Stephen. Renaissance Self-Fashioning: From More to Shakespeare. U of Chicago P, 2005. Renaissance Self-Fashioning by Stephen Greenblatt focuses on the nature of selves and how individuals’ perceptions of themselves changed over time. My research will dealy soley with the introduction of this book, which lays out the premise and establishes many of the important themes, ideas, and questions Greenblatt intends to answer. The introduction is full of Greenblatt’s thoughts on his work, and presents important themes of the nature of free will and agency. I believe Greenblatt’s book will be useful as a source due to the new perspectives he offers on my subject. We have had many discussions about how free will, agency, and autonomy are presented in Renaissance Self-Fashioning and I believe that many of our ideas can be used to further my research into perception and reality. The most important topic I will borrow from Greenblatt is the nature of agency, and the important discussion of whether or not Greenblatt is giving us agency or simply showing us the agency we already have. If the answer is closer to the latter, it could provide a very helpful example and perspective to use in my project, as it is a key example of how changing our perception of the world alters reality as well.
