Cover letter:
Before viewing my concept map and reading by persuasive writing, I would like to explain some of the background and context surrounding it, as well as the inspiration I attempted to incorporate into it. The goal of the concept map was to demonstrate our thinking and summarize the key concepts of the works we read in a visual representation. I chose to do mine as a series of questions as I found them o be the most important part of my thinking and learning throughout the summer work process. This work was done during the first week of school however, as several misunderstandings regarding our summer work assignments resulted in a necessary revision of a large portion of the formal writing we did. As such, I had less time to create this work than I would have preferred. I would have greatly liked an opportunity to expand my concept map, making it more complex and adding several more layers of intertwining questions and themes. At the moment, it is only a very broad view of the immense complexities and inquiries that can be found within the 3 works shown. Every individual piece of the map can be continued on and on for many more layers. Maria Popova’s “Brain picking” series of articles served as inspiration for my persuasive writing. In particular, I aimed to emulate frequent use of thoughtful and meaningful quotes, including beginning my piece with a quote, which Maria does in almost all of the works we read. Examples of the style of quotes Maria frequently uses can be found in such articles as: “Alan Lightman on the Longing for Absolutes in a Relative World and What Gives Lasting Meaning to Our Lives” https://www.brainpickings.org/2018/03/27/alan-lightman-searching-for-stars-on-an-island-in-maine/ “Ursula K. Le Guin on Redeeming the Imagination from the Commodification of Creativity and How Storytelling Teaches Us to Assemble Ourselves” https://www.brainpickings.org/2017/04/13/ursula-k-le-guin-operating-instructions-words-are-my-matter/ Given the nature of the assignment, as it was not only synthesizing several sources as Maria does, but also explaining and discussing a separate piece of work, it was not possible to fully emulate all aspects of Maria’s work, such as more detailed summaries of the work she synthesizes. To fully grasp the meaning of the map, I would encourage readers to consider how all of the questions presented go together, and how many further questions you can ask from those. Doing this, you will be able to fully see how limitless questioning can be, and how doing so can always guide you to new meaning and understanding of a text.
